Background of the Study
Electoral processes play a significant role in shaping political participation, especially for women in Nigeria, where systemic barriers such as gender biases and traditional beliefs often hinder female political involvement (Ogunleye & Yusuff, 2024). In Jalingo Local Government Area, Taraba State, women’s political participation has historically been limited, with societal perceptions about women’s roles in politics and the electoral process contributing to their underrepresentation (Kolo & Ibrahim, 2025). Although various initiatives and gender-sensitive policies have been introduced to encourage women’s participation in elections, challenges such as limited access to campaign resources, patriarchal structures, and voter apathy persist, further marginalizing women from the political sphere (Kwara & Adam, 2023). This study seeks to explore the impact of electoral processes on women’s political participation in Jalingo, focusing on electoral laws, political party strategies, and socio-cultural factors that influence female voter turnout and candidacy in the region.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Women in Jalingo Local Government Area face several challenges that hinder their full participation in electoral processes, including limited access to resources, societal biases, and a lack of political training. These barriers contribute to a significant gender disparity in political participation, resulting in fewer women running for office or actively participating in electoral activities (Bello & Garba, 2023). Despite various gender-sensitive policies, the impact of electoral processes on increasing female participation remains under-researched. This study aims to address the gap in understanding the specific challenges faced by women in Jalingo during elections and the electoral reforms that can foster greater inclusion.

This study is important because it will provide a deeper understanding of the intersection between electoral processes and women’s political participation in Jalingo. The findings will inform policymakers, electoral bodies, and political parties on the specific challenges faced by women and the potential reforms needed to enhance their participation in elections. The study’s outcomes will also contribute to the broader discourse on gender equality in Nigerian politics, especially in regions like Jalingo, where traditional barriers are more entrenched.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
